What are official statistics?

​Official statistics are statistics published by government agencies or other public bodies such as international organizations.

Who is responsible for official statistics in Brunei Darussalam? ​
The Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), through the Department of Statistics is the central statistical agency in Brunei Darussalam. JPKE serves as the authority on national socio-economic statistics and is responsible for coordinating the National Statistical System.​ ​

What is the National Statistical System?​ ​
​The National Statistical System comprises the following:

 

  • producers of statistics, including the Department of Statistics, JPKE as the coordinating agency, Government      ministries and departments and public agencies;
  • data users, including key users such as policy and decision makers;
  • data suppliers, including business enterprises and households; and
  • research and training institutions, including universities and colleges.

​​How does JPKE collect the latest statistics for Brunei Darussalam?​
​JPKE collects and compiles the national statistics from two main sources:
  • Through censuses and surveys conducted by JPKE.
  • Through administrative data from the relevant government agencies and other bodies.

What authority does JPKE has in collecting data from businesses and households?​ ​
According to the Census Act, Chapter 78 and the Statistics Act, Chapter 81 of the Laws of Brunei Darussalam, JPKE is empowered to conduct statistical censuses and surveys, covering either the business enterprises of the private households.
 

JPKE is currently reviewing both Acts to be in line with the latest international recommendations.​ ​


What are the censuses and surveys conducted by JPKE? ​
The censuses conducted by JPKE are the Population and Housing Census, every 10 years; and the Economic  Census of Business Enterprises, every 5 years.

 
The major surveys are the Household Expenditure Survey, the Labour Force Survey and the Quarterly Survey of Businesses.​ ​

Why do I have to take part in the census or survey?
Both the Census Act and Statistics Act stipulate that households and enterprises age obligated to cooperate and  provide complete and accurate information as requested.

Statistical information is very useful for government policy formulation and decision making and various other uses by the business community, researchers, students and the general public.

High quality and timely statistics relies on the accurate information provided by households and enterprises.

Therefore, your support and cooperation are crucial.  ​ ​

Where can I get the latest data? ​
JPKE releases regularly the latest data through its printed publications, media releases and also report and data uploads to JPKE’s website (www.depd.gov.bn)​ ​

What if the data that I require is not available in the publication or the website?
​Users may request any additional data by e-mailing the details to info.statistics@jpke.gov.bn

What is an Advance Release Calendar? ​
​An Advance Release Calendar (ARC) provides information to the users and the general public on the schedule of release of data for the coming months.

JPKE started implementing the ARC in 2015 for the monthly data on Consumer Price Index (CPI), International Merchandise Trade Statistics (IMTS) and the Registered Unemployed, as well as the quarterly data on Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
